Privately owned airports get $240M in FAA funding

Privately owned airports have received $240 million in FAA grants intended to create a more robust aviation system by alleviating congestion at nearby commercial facilities. Some of the airports are mom-and-pop operations, while others are operated by big corporations. In every case, the owners say their airports promote local economies, but critics say there is little direct benefit to the general public, according to an analysis by USA TODAY.

Continental's new CEO expects cautious change

More international traffic and deeper partnership ties are among the priorities for Jeff Smisek as he takes the reins Friday at Continental Airlines. After five years as the airline's No. 2, Smisek will take over from retiring CEO Larry Kellner at a time when air travel appears poised for a recovery. "I don't intend to revolutionize Continental," Smisek says, noting that he plans to keep his predecessor's office furniture. Still, he says further discussions on merging with United Airlines could take place eventually. "I could never say I wouldn't do it," he admits.

General Information
For many professional pilots, the ultimate job is to be an airline captain. The pay can be very good; top salary at some of the higher paying major airlines is around $200,000 a year, for about 80 to 85 hours of flying per month. And benefits for pilots, as well as many other airline employees, include travel passes. But remember, the top salary level is reached only after many years of service and only at a few of the major airlines. Most airline pilots start out as first officer (co-pilot) with a regional carrier; initially they earn about $15,000 to $20,000 a year. And when they join a major airline, their first position may not be as a pilot, but as a flight engineer. Considerable training is necessary for any type of pilot job, and most airline pilots have to "pay their dues" by first gaining a good deal of experience either in the military or in other types of civilian piloting. In addition to airline pilot, pilot jobs include flight instructor, corporate pilot, charter pilot, test pilot, and agricultural pilot. Many people enjoy these kinds of flying - each with its own set of challenges and rewards - and wouldn't think of trading their jobs for that of airline pilot.

Position Description

We are in search of a quality Sheet Metal Mechanic to perform the following duties:

Inspects, service and repair aircraft structures and components.
Consult and follow FAA, Manufacturer‘s, and Ameriflight regulations and procedures as appropriate while conducting aircraft maintenance.
Performs other duties as assigned by Manager or Lead Maintenance Technician as appropriate.

Must have a minimum of two years related experience and/or training. A&P License preferred.

POSITION PURPOSE:

To provide outstanding customer relations for all visitors, patrons and residents of the Vail Valley Jet Center.

To determine the demand for products and services. Develop strong relationships with existing customers while enticing new customers from other markets. Build upon a marketing strategy to expand the Jet Center’s customer base. Bring new facilities, products, and services to our airport. Oversee product development or monitor trends that indicate the need for new products and services.

Position Description

DUTIES: The candidate shall be experienced in the maintenance of aircraft ejection seats, aircraft air conditioning systems, canopy systems, canopy jettison/fracturing systems, fire warning/extinguishing systems, OBOGS repair/troubleshooting, Radar Liquid Cooling System servicing, aircraft environmental systems maintenance, and aircraft pressurization systems. PR’s inspect, maintain and repair parachutes, seat pans, survival equipment, flight protective equipment and clothing, pack and rig parachutes, pack and equip life rafts; troubleshoot oxygen systems, repair and test oxygen regulators and Liquid Oxygen (LOX) converters removed from the aircraft, fit and maintain; oxygen masks, flight clothing, anti exposure suits and anti - G suits; operate and maintain carbon dioxide transfer and recharge equipment; operate and repair sewing machines; conduct special calendar/periodic inspections of survival equipment; supervise operation of parachute lofts and survival equipment work centers.

QUALIFICATIONS: Aircraft Mechanic II shall have not less than 5 years USN/USMC/USCG Organizational Level NAMP aircraft maintenance support experience.
